Larger packs were more common before the dogs became endangered. Social interactions are common, and the dogs communicate by touch, actions, and vocalizations.Īfrican wild dogs hunt in formidable, cooperative packs of six to 20 (or more) animals. These dogs are very social, and packs have been known to share food and to assist weak or ill members. The female has a litter of two to 20 pups, which are cared for by the entire pack. Pack behavior and huntingĪfrican wild dogs live in packs that are usually dominated by a monogamous breeding pair. Their largest populations can be found in Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Zambia, Tanzania, and Mozambique. These days, African wild dogs typically roam the open plains and sparse woodlands of sub-Saharan Africa. Though they were once found throughout the continent-from desert to mountain habitats-African wild dogs have disappeared from most of their geographic range. These long-legged canines have only four toes per foot, unlike other dogs, which have five toes on their forefeet. Each animal has its own unique coat pattern, and all have big, rounded ears. Its scientific name, Lycaon pictus, means “painted wolf,” referring to the animal's irregular, mottled coat, which features patches of red, black, brown, white, and yellow fur. The African wild dog is known by many names, including Cape hunting dog or painted dog. In fact, if you're looking to breed your pooch, a copulatory tie is a positive sign-one that might mean that some furry bundles of joy are on the way soon.Current Population Trend: Decreasing What is the African wild dog? Seeing your dog stuck during mating may be hard to watch, but it's not harmful. The only foolproof way of avoiding pregnancy is to spay or neuter your dog. Dogs on the scent of a mating-ready female have been known to knock down people and break through doors and crates. "When the bloody discharge dissipates, that's when she's most fertile."īut do remember that keeping a male dog from a female that's in heat can be difficult. "A female is potentially fertile four weeks after the start of her heat cycle," notes Greer. To prevent unwanted pregnancies, keep male dogs away from fertile female dogs so mating doesn't take place. Although watching dogs in this awkward position may be agonizing for you, it's simply a part of canine mating. Instead, encourage your dog to remain calm. But hold up: Pulling dogs apart can seriously injure them and doing so won't stop a pregnancy from occurring. You might be tempted to try to separate dogs when they're stuck in a copulatory tie during mating. What to Do When Dogs Get Stuck While Mating However, even with less of the hormone, your dog can still become aroused, have intercourse, and end with a copulatory tie. Testosterone increases a dog's sex drive and affects the swelling of the bulbis glandis. That's because he may still have higher testosterone levels than he will later on," says Greer. "It's more likely if your dog is recently neutered. It's rare, but not impossible for a neutered dog to get stuck when pairing up with a female. If you're worried your dog has accidentally become pregnant, reach out to your veterinarian as early as possible to discuss options. You may also see signs of pregnancy about three weeks after mating, such as: But pregnancy in dogs is never guaranteed, Greer says, "Just like in people, not every mating is successful."Īccording to the American Kennel Club, a veterinarian can determine if your dog is pregnant with an exam or an ultrasound around 25 days after mating. The longer dogs are stuck together in a copulatory tie, the greater the chance that the semen will reach the eggs. Does Getting Stuck Mean the Female Dog Is Pregnant? This will occur on its own once the male dog's arousal subsides. Help your dog to remain calm and stand still until the two can safely separate. Dogs new to mating may experience a bit of anxiety at being locked together, but it's a natural process. The male dog dismounts and ends up rear-to-rear with the female. "It improves the likelihood that semen reaches the eggs by pushing it forward and acting as a plug to keep semen inside the female." How Long Do Dogs Stay Stuck Together After Breeding?ĭogs remain stuck together at the end-stage of mating for five to 45 minutes, says Greer. From an evolutionary perspective, the copulatory tie helps them make the most of every opportunity to produce offspring," Marty Greer, DVM, author of Canine Reproduction and Neonatology and co-owner of Veterinary Village in Lomira, Wis., says. "Unlike cats who are fertile every 21 days, dogs only come into heat twice a year. Essentially, the pair are locked together until the swelling subsides. During intercourse, a part of the male dog's penis called the bulbis glandis swells and prevents him from pulling out. It's something that nearly all canines do, including wolves and foxes. Dogs get stuck together as the final step in their mating process.

And it would smooth out PRRT collections over time. That is, you are bringing forward future tax at a discount rate of 5% above the bond rate. This would bring in immediate money, and the unclaimed losses would go forward with the 5% rate. With the current political resistance to change in mind, one simple tax bring forward idea is to legislate that, when current year profits are above a certain level, then only, say, two thirds can benefit from the carry forward of past losses, and the remaining third is subject to PRRT without the uplift. In a speech I gave late last year, I said: The government’s changes mean that, after seven years of production revenue, companies will only be allowed to offset costs carried forward against 90% of their income for PRRT purposes the costs that would have been offset against the other 10% are carried forward at the bond rate. Thus, generous cost carry-forward arrangements were applied to an industry to which they were extremely badly suited. Not only were the cost carry-forward factors, which need to be offset before any PRRT is paid, seen as generous at the time, as the then government sought to do all it could to encourage investment in petroleum in Bass Strait, they were not designed for the gas industry with its longer lead times from exploration to production. Sign up for Guardian Australia’s free morning and afternoon email newsletters for your daily news roundupĪustralia’s PRRT was designed for the oil industry in the mid 1980s. Countries in many parts of the world impose resource rent taxes to share the benefits of these high returns with the countries’ population at large, who own these resources. Such rents, or excess returns, often accrue in extractive industries which periodically see very high prices, as has happened with gas as a result of the war in Ukraine. Economic rent is income above that which is necessary to attract the economically optimal amount of investment into an activity. The IND 63rd Street Line between Queens and Manhattan opened on October 29, 1989, and was connected to the Queens Boulevard Line on December 16, 2001. The 63rd Street Tunnel lay unused for over a decade, and its lower level, intended for future Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) service, was completed solely to support the subway line above it. After these plans were abandoned in the mid-1970s, it was commonly referred to as a "subway to nowhere" because it ended one stop into Queens, without any infrastructure connecting to other subway lines in Queens. The IND 63rd Street Line was originally planned to be extended further east into Queens as a super-express bypass of the IND Queens Boulevard Line. These lines were conceived as part of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's 1968 expansion plans, and along with the Archer Avenue lines and a small section of the Second Avenue Subway, they were the only portions of the plan to be completed before it was scaled back due to fiscal issues. The crossover between the lines has been used in the past during service disruptions as well as during the Manhattan Bridge closures in the late 1990s. Also known as the Second Avenue Connection, : 128 it links the BMT Broadway Line to the Second Avenue Subway, both in Manhattan. The northern, BMT, line is served by the Q train at all times, although a limited number of N and R trains also serve the line during rush hours. It uses the upper level of the bi-level 63rd Street Tunnel to travel under the East River between Manhattan and Queens. The IND line, the southern of the two lines, is served by F trains at all times it connects the IND Sixth Avenue Line in Manhattan to the IND Queens Boulevard Line in Queens. Crossover connections between each line's respective tracks are located just to the west of the Lexington Avenue station. The two lines run under 63rd Street in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, with a cross-platform interchange at the Lexington Avenue–63rd Street station.Įach line consists of two tracks in a stacked configuration, with the southbound tracks of each line parallel to each other on the upper level, while the northbound tracks are parallel on the lower level. This creates delays and ties up more processor time. However, a long encryption key makes the encryption process much more complicated. A longer key creates encryption that is harder to crack. You can select the length of the key used for this cipher. The OpenVPN implementation of OverPlay uses AES encryption. These applications work better with the User Datagram Protocol, which is UDP - a very lightweight transfer protocol that has very few procedures. However, its session establishment procedures and transmission sequencing checks create delays that slow down interactive applications, such as internet telephony and high volume systems, such as video streaming. The Transmission Control Protocol is the communication methodology traditionally used over the internet. The app gives a choice of encryption strength and also lets you decide whether to use TCP procedures or UDP methods. The OverPlay app implements OpenVPN, which is the VPN protocol that we at endorse. Is there anything that you feel I haven’t included here but should be put on by every duck hunter? Do you have any questions that have troubled you a lot when it comes to duck hunting clothing? Well, feel free to engage me. It is for this reason that I thought it wise to share with the duck hunting enthusiasts whether beginners or professionals, some of the most important clothing that they should never leave behind. You really need to know what to put on in as much as you need to know all that you’ll use to catch or kill the ducks. In most cases, hunters get it wrong by concentrating on the hunting equipment leaving out all the clothing aspects. Wrapping Upĭuck hunting is a very adventurous activity that can be enjoyed by men, women and children alike. The boots should be tough to the extent that nothing can easily penetrate it and end up hurting your legs. What will you gain if you catch as many ducks as possible but in the end you get out with a serious injury like a snake bite? To protect your feet from getting injured, there is need to have boots on. You never know what lies deep in the waters. The jackets are also good for keeping you warm as you hunt.Īny hunting task that requires you to wade in the waters requires you to have boots that cover up to your hips. It is the very jacket that will also shield you against the cold whenever you’re out there hunting. There are instances that you might want to hide in the grass, timber or in the cattails where it won’t be quite necessary to choke yourself in waders, that’s where you’ll need the jacket the most.Ī jacket that will match the surrounding color patterns and at the same time matches the conditions will do. JacketsĬamouflage jackets are also essential especially in the absence of waders. You might sweat in these waders but it’s better that way but keep yourself protected. The best waders are made from Neoprene and have their knees reinforced besides being puncture resistant. Ideal waders need to be boot-foot models that have been designed with deep and fine treads for stability and proper grip. Never make the mistake of buying low quality waders as the leaks will be so irritating as you hunt. The waders will also be of great help when collecting and setting up decoys as well as picking up birds. You will need to have waders on for purposes of slogging through muck and water in most cases unless you decide to go field hunting. Here is a list of some of the most important gear and what their functions are. Without wasting any time, it is necessary to have a look at some of the things you need to wear while duck hunting. List of the gear needed for duck hunting. She writes intimate, confessional songs, in what she describes as a "folk idiom that has evolved from old folk music, through Bob Dylan, to personal folk music". Citing Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and Jackson Browne as influences, Colvin sings about herself. So, on top of the usual broken hearts and shattered love affairs that singer-songwriters perennially plumb, she also deals with her alcoholism and depression. "I believe in a biological predisposition towards it, and I suffered terrible anxiety and panic and sensitivity." "Looking back, I see I've had a form of depression from when I was around five years old," she says. Growing up in the 1950s and 60s in the American midwest meant her condition went unrecognised. (Even when she was diagnosed and medicated, in the 1970s, drugs then had dreadful side-effects). Her parents, who married young, were the product of their time. Essentially, they tried to break my spirit, which wasn't an uncommon way to bring up a kid in those days." "They weren't prepared for a kid like me. In Tuff Kid, she sings "My daddy hit me but he couldn't quit me/ We showed each other how to feel alive", while in The Story, she sings of her parents, "And he never did guess/ in her cast-iron dress/ she was burning beyond recognition".Īfter a difficult childhood, Colvin went to college and it was there she started drinking. "I didn't drink until then because I was frightened of losing control, but when I started, when I was 19, that was it. I don't think anyone escapes into addiction because they feel good about themselves and the world is bothering them. "Sometimes, I still just want to take the edge off." It was so nice to take the edge off."Įven today, some 24 years after she stopped drinking, she struggles with it.Īnd if you're that anxious for that long, it takes a lot of energy to deal with it. Music played a huge part in keeping her together. She learnt to play guitar at 10 and moved to New York in her early 20s where, after playing in various bands, she met John Leventhal, the producer and writer with whom she's maintained a creative partnership for 25 years. Leventhal's fingerprints are visible on most of Colvin's nine albums and it was with him she achieved her most commercial success with Sunny Came Home, which won song of the year and record of the year at the 1998 Grammys. Given her tendency and talent for writing personal songs, it's ironic that Colvin is best known for a song that isn't about her at all. A feisty murder ballad, Sunny Came Home, is about a woman, betrayed and belittled by her husband, who returns home and sets fire to her house. "For the record, I've never set fire to my house or murdered anyone," she says, impishly. If Colvin had a breakthrough, A Few Small Repairs, the album containing Sunny Came Home, was it. Another song from the album became the theme tune of the short-lived Brooke Shields sitcom, Suddenly Susan, and she recorded songs for film soundtracks, among them Julia Roberts' Runaway Bride. She's appeared in The Simpsons, in which she voiced Rachel Jordan, the Christian rock star who dated Ned Flanders after Maude's death. And yet, she never fully crossed into the mainstream, remaining more of a cult favourite, a hidden gem, a diamond in the rough. Last edited by Bass man 01-19-2010 at 04:40 PM.
